Going Home

5 days and we will be in Florida!!

We are going to see Kris, Erick and Mia for a few days in Florida then going to Chicago.  We are taking a whirlwind trip to see everybody.  We are going to Grand Island to see Dave, Marcie, Cameron and Jackson.  The new "no-name" baby will be born after we leave-boo hoo.

Then we will stop in Kansas City to visit John's mom, see Jeff and Dorothy, see Peggy, Greg and Kimberly and pick up my mom.  We will then go to Quincy to see Mike, Mel, Levi, Naomi and Silas with my mom.  Jennifer will meet us there. Then back to Chicago to leave for the Holy Land tour.

We will be back in Chicago one day after the Holy Land and then leave to come back to Argentina.  We will arrive in Buenos Aires on Sunday afternoon, March 8 and the new cadets arrive on Monday, March 9.  I hope we can stay awake to welcome them and give their orientation.

That will be lots of frequent flyer miles and lots of opportunities to be snowed in, but we hope and pray that all will go smoothly.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from Argentina

NEWSLETTER #2

December 2008

John 8:12 (NVI)

“I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

May His LIGHT brighten your way.

May His LOVE warm your Christmas.

May His LIFE inspire yours this coming year.

It is incredible that a year has passed since we last wrote a Newsletter.  I have put a few posts on Xanga and now have a site on Face book, but I have not been very good about posting news.  A year and four months have passed since we came to Argentina.  We are finishing up a year of teaching classes and are preparing for our second Commissioning in the South America East Territory. Really we are working hard at the School and don’t have much time to do other things.  However, we truly have been blessed to be a part of the formation of future officers in this Territory.  And we are excited to be here at this time of expansion.

When we came last year we commissioned 3 cadets in the “God’s Fellow Workers” session and there are 5 cadets in the “Witnesses of Christ” session that will be commissioned on December 13, 2008.  The “Prayer Warriors” session that is first years right now has 9 cadets. Next March we are expecting 13 for the “Ambassadors of Holiness” session!  That is the most cadets for Argentina in a long time!

With the help of the Central Territory USA we remodeled one section of the School last summer and are doing another remodeling project this summer in order to have apartments for the married couples that will be here.  The Central has helped us to buy new vehicles for the School.  And we were also able to send a married couple to CFOT in Chicago for one years training experience.  Cadets Mauricio and Melisa Gutierrez are there right now.  If you see them, please talk to them and greet them for us.

In February we will be home for a couple of weeks of vacation.  Then we will be joining with our fellow pilgrims to go on the Holy Land Tour.  We will return to Chicago on March 5 then leave for Argentina.  We will arrive in Buenos Aires on Sunday, March 8 and the cadets arrive at the School on Monday, March 9.  I hope we can stay awake to welcome them!

As far as our family, Kris and Erick and Mia are doing fine in Florida.  They have just recently moved to Jacksonville.  Mia celebrates her second birthday on December 14.  We will get to see them for a few days when we are home.

We also hope to see Jenny at one of the boys’ homes.  She is doing very well.  She still enjoys teaching High School math in Dallas although she does miss being near the family.  She has made several trips to visit Mike and Dave and their families.

Mike and Mel have three kids now – Levi is 4, Naomi is 2 and Silas just turned 1 in November. They and their kids are doing good and working at the Quincy, IL Corps/Kroc Center.  We will spend a couple of days with them in February so the kids can remember who we are.

David and Marcie and kids are doing well.  They are now the Corps Officers in Grand Island, Nebraska.  Their kids are growing fast.  Cameron is 3 and Jack turns 1 on December 4.  They are expecting their third little boy in March.  A trip to their new house is on our schedule also.

Thanks to the wonders of SKYPE we have been able to talk to and see our family through the computer.  When Kris asks Mia if she wants to talk to grandma and grandpa she responds, “Computer”.  We do miss them all very much though.

God truly is good!!  He has such wonders in store for us as we obey His will.  I have been an officer for many years, but God never ceases to amaze and bless me.

May God richly bless you and your family at this very precious time of the year.   Have a Merry Christmas and a very Blessed New Year.

With lots of love and prayers to all,

Majors John and Nancy Mowers

Other BIG News

I have not posted the REALLY BIG NEWS for SFOT in Argentina.  There are a few of you who have worked with and know our SFOT Team officer, Major Elena Miño.  She is an Argentine officer but has been working in Central America for about 9 or 10 years.  She knows many of the Centralites who did Service Corps projects in El Salvador and Honduras.  She has also visited in Chicago once.

Any way, the big news is that she and a first year cadet, Juan Duarte are ENGAGED!!!!!  This is quite a change for both of them.  They are both in their mid 30s and are very independent persons.  Elena especially has a lot of adjusting to do.  She is used to being in charge and having people working under her.  Poor Juan!  But she has done a lot of soul searching and humbiling of herself in this past year, so I know she has the idea of what she needs to do in order to be a partner with Juan.  She is talking about how she needs to change from always thinking - I, I, I and think - we, we, we.

Those of you who know her should send her a note of encouragement and prayers.

We are very excited for them both.  It has meant some changes in deligation of work for the Officer Team, but we are thrilled.  I tried to take pictures of them when John announced this to the Cadets, but they did not turn out very well.  I will post one anyway so you can sort of see the great couple.

Spring Campaigns

Wow, it has been a long time.  I guess that means I have been working hard !?!?

John and I had a scare last Friday evening.  We got in the elevator at our apartment building to go over to the School for supper and the elevator started and felt like it fell and stopped abroptly in between the fourth and third floors.  We were a bit shaken up but John was able to make a cellphone call to the cadets to come help.  Before they arrived though he figured out how to release the outside door and climbed out.  I'm sure it was quite comical to watch him trying to lift me down too.  We were shaken up but just fine.  It was just a matter of setting a reset button, we think.  So it was up and running the next morning.

John and Major Elena left at 5:00am this morning with 10 cadets for Spring Campaigns in Paraguay.  They are going as far as the border today and stopping overnight there.  In the morning they are taking the cadets to visit Iguazu Falls and then cross over the corner of Brazil to enter Paraguay.  John may have to pay $US$200 just for the 20 minute crossing, but we are hoping not.  US citizens have to pay to enter Brazil, the cadets don't have to pay.

I am holding down the fort at SFOT with two cadets that are taking care of their children.  I am hoping to get a little ahead on my daily class plans for English.  I also have some other errands to tend to.

My next posting hopefully will have pictures of the campaign.

Adminstrative Conference

We had a great time up north at Iguazu Falls.  The Conference was very good, with Comm. Barry and Sue Swanson as the special guests.  It was great to renew our friendship and to get in some time to talk about things concerning us in their future role as our TCs.

 Iguazu 085

We got a chance to take the tour of the Falls.  They are spectacular.  I have almost 100 pictures but I'll just put a couple on for you to see.  The walkways were right over top of the falls in a lot of places.
